This book explores how employment can be projected with a focus on the stepping-down of county-level population and employment projections to a defined sub-county spatial level. Using Illinois as a study, the author presents a survey of projection activities by selected agencies and provides a detailed guide and critical evaluation of single region models. It also presents a series of employment sector models with tests of their accuracy for forecasting employment levels. These include regression, exponential, share, and shift-share models, all of which have been used in a large number of studies. The author concludes that none of the models provided estimates that were within acceptable limits or consistent over sets of counties or industrial sectors. As such, the book highlights the need for additional research in substate population and employment analysis.
