Synopsis
This book is a report to the United States Congress on the scope and effectiveness of various aspects of federal archaeological activities. Produced in accordance with the Archeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974 and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979, as amended, the report was written by the Department of Interior’s Departmental Consulting Archeologist. It details efforts by federal agencies to preserve and interpret the nation's archaeological resources and discusses the progress made towards four areas of emphasis: increasing and enhancing the quality of archaeological site inventories, improving the communication of archaeological information, increasing cooperation in efforts to protect archaeological properties, and increasing public education, outreach, and involvement efforts. The report also describes special programs designed to improve archaeological site protection and looting and vandalism of archaeological sites on public lands.
