Il y a environ douze années que nous nous occupons de réunir et d'élaborer les éléments de cet ouvrage sur le régime industriel, l'avenir financier et le rôle social des chemins de fer, en un mot sur les applications de la science écono mique à ces voies nouvelles. Ce fut durant la crise de 1846, qui jeta tant de trouble dans les Opérations commencées, que nous fûmes amené à nous demander s'il ne serait pas possible, en observant les faits sur une large échelle au dedans et au dehors de nos frontières, de pré ciser quelques-unes des lois destinées à régir le fécond principe de force dont le génie de ce siè cle avait doté la civilisation.
