Ut ad unumquemque fere veterum scripto penitus intelle gendum et recte aestimandum multum valet eius vitae rerum, aetatis cognitio, ita Theocriti quoque artem eximiam atque ingenii varietatem, quam admiramur omnes, melius etiam perspiceremus, si poetae vitam carminumque tempora accurate comperta haberemus, ut liceret nobis diiudieare, qua ratione et per quos gradus ingenium eius educatum esset et formatum.
