Ut ad unumquemque fere veterum scripto penitus intelle gendum et recte aestimandum multum valet eius vitae rerum, aetatis cognitio, ita Theocriti quoque artem eximiam atque ingenii varietatem, quam admiramur omnes, melius etiam perspiceremus, si poetae vitam carminumque tempora accurate comperta haberemus, ut liceret nobis diiudieare, qua ratione et per quos gradus ingenium eius educatum esset et formatum. At quae de Theocriti vita rebusque tradita accepimus, adeo sunt incerta atque etiam confusa, ut hac ope destituti paene omni ad ipsa carmina interpretando. Reiciamur. Quare mirum non est, quod tot viri operam suam in hoc genere posuerunt successa non pari. Lam quod ego post alios et doctiores et argutiores ad hano quaestionem aggredior, hoc mihi condonabitur, quia in re nondum ad liquidum redacta nonnumquam aliquis etiam imperitior veritatis vel granulum ut ita dicam, reperire potest.
