Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a complete investigation into the mathematical theory of the movement of a solid body in the homogeneous, incompressible, and irrotational liquid where no external forces act and where the motion started from rest. The author contends that an adequate analysis of this problem had not been undertaken due to the inadequacy of integration methods. The challenge, as the author saw it, was that the problem could not be solved by methods known at the time, not even for the simplest case, that of a body in the shape of a sphere. The author's examination, however, revealed that the problem could be completely solved whenever the solid body is an ellipsoid or a sphere, and when its density is constant or, in the case of a sphere, when its density is distributed in concentric layers. The solutions are given in full detail for the first case, that of a sphere. The book is a valuable resource for mathematicians, theoretical physicists, and applied scientists working in the fields of classical mechanics, mathematical physics, and fluid dynamics.
