Ch. V. - VII. - Socrates expresses the omon that a philosopher should be willing, even wishful, to die, but quotes two stock reasons against suicide: (1) We are in custody here, and ought not to try to escape (2) we are the slaves of the gods, and so ought not to deprive them of our services. Simmias and Cebes raise the objection that in that case Socrates ought not to wish to die.
