Excerpt from Kilmington Church Wardens' Accounts, 1560 1608
Kilmington is a small Parish in East Devon, area acres, population 558. Ecclesiastically, it is a Parochial Chapelry annexed to the Vicarage of Axminster, in the Rural Deanery of Honiton, and the Archdeaconry of Exeter.
The old volume of Church Wardens' Accounts was in the Vestry, and by the courtesy of the Vicar and Churchwardens, I have been allowed to transcribe, and so to preserve an interesting record of parish life during a most important era of our history in Church and State. The Register contains 100 pages of coarse paper. The Parchment Cover (see below), is well worthy of notice.
My notes at the end of each year's accounts lay no claim to Antiquarian accuracy, but may occasionally explain some local phrase or topic. Any remarks on words that have been misunderstood or unexplained will be most welcome.
