A l'arrivée des beaux jours, décidé à reprendre un tra vail intellectuel, Wagner se retira à Meudon. Là, il ne tarda pas à apprendre que son esquisse du Hollandais vo lant avait été développée par le poète Paul F ouché. Crai gnant d'en être frustré, qui plus est, averti par ses infruc tueu'x essais qu'il lui serait désormais impossible d'écrire un opéra susceptible d'être représenté à Paris, il consentit à la céder à Pillet pour cinq cents francs. Le marché conclu, il traita son sujet en vers allemands et travailla sans désemparer. En sept semaines temps incroyable ment court il composa, sauf l'ouverture, tout l'opéra du Hollandais volant et s'empressa d'en envoyer la parti tion à Meyerbeer. Arrivé à ses fins, il revint à Paris et se logea au numéro 14 de la rue jacob, toujours poursuivi par la mauvaise fortune. Au loin, par bonheur, son Rzenzz avait fini par trouver faveur à l'opéra de Dresde, et le théâtre royal de Berlin avait promis de monter sa nouvelle oeuvre. A cette heure, aucune raison ne militait pour un plus long séjour en France. Aussi ne songea-t-il qu'à amasser quelque peu d'argent et à retourner en Allemagne. Il se mit en route le 7 avril 1842. Pour la première fois, dit-il lui-même, je vis le les yeux mouillés de claires larmes, je jurai, pauvre musicien, une fidélité éter nelle à ma patrie allemande.
