Considering the attractiveness of the subject, it is not surprising to find that a great many investigators in the field of the early drama have turned their attention to the Latin and early vernacular plays and have drawn conclusions of various kinds in regard to their sources and develop ment. For the purpose of a brief but comprehensive survey of the entire field of the early medieval drama, the various writers may be divided into four groups, with the understanding, however, that the groups are not sharply defined, but to some extent overlap each other.
