Exploring Livy’s Second Book unlocks the romance and grit behind Rome’s early days.

This edition presents the notes and introduction that help readers see how ancient stories mix fact, tradition, and national poetry to shape Rome’s self-image.

The text frames the transition from kings to the early Republic as a shift from myth to tradition, where genuine kernels of history mix with celebrated deeds. It explains why later scholars treat these traditions with both caution and reverence, showing how archaeology, linguistics, and careful commentary illuminate our understanding without turning lively legends into strict history.

Understand how Livy blends poetical language with historical narrative to convey Roman ideals.
Learn why early Roman legends are read as national poetry, not strict biographies.
See how modern scholarship weighs tradition, myth, and possible facts to interpret the past.
Discover the role of scholarly notes and introductions in tracing sources and interpretations.

Ideal for readers of classical history, Rome’s early days, and anyone seeking a clearer view of how ancient traditions inform modern understanding of the past. Livy, Vol. 2, offers a guide to navigating these enduring stories with caution and curiosity.
