Synopsis

Explore the foundations of moral thought with an Oxford professor’s introductory lectures.

Delve into the aims, methods, and scope of Moral Philosophy as Hampden presents it. This edition clarifies how moral inquiry differs from physical science and why a broad, educated view is essential to understanding human nature and conduct.

In these lectures, you’ll see:

• How moral science has been misunderstood and why clear guidance matters for students.
• The relationship between moral philosophy, ethics, religion, and education.
• A roadmap for studying the subject, including how to read ancient and modern thinkers with discernment.
• What you will gain from a systematic approach to moral inquiry, from the nature of moral evidence to classifying moral sciences.
• The practical value of moral study for individuals, communities, and religious interpretation.
• A framework for reading and thinking that connects theory with everyday judgment.

Ideal for readers of philosophy, theology, or classical education who want a structured, accessible introduction to the field.
