An solchen Tagen, welche die Naturforscher Deutsch lands zum lebhaftesten Gedankenaustausch vereinigen wird das Bedürfnis rege in dem gewaltigen Kampfe menschlicher Erkenntnis mit den dunkeln Mächten der Natur einen Augen blick stille zu halten, um ruhiger Betrachtung sich hinzugeben. Man wird entweder dazu neigen, einen Rückblick auf ein durch mühevolle Forschung durchwühltes Gebiet zu werfen, um das siegreich Erworbene zu überblicken, mit scharfer Prüfung das Sichere vom Unsicheren, das echt Leuchtende vom glitzernden Schein zu sondern; oder man wird einen Ausblick in weite schimmernde Fernen wagen, wo, in duftigen Nebel ge hüllt, noch nie betretene reiche Fluren verheissungsvoll winken die zu erreichen und zu erforschen jugendliche Kampfeslust ungestüm vorwärts drängt. Heute nun möchte ich mich der vorwärtsschauenden Betrachtung zuwenden und versuchen, ein Aussichtsbild zu entrollen von einer solchen fer nen, aber zukunftsreichen Welt der Erscheinungen, die mit den tiefsten Fragen alles Lebens verknüpft ist ich meine die der Physiologie der Fortpflanzung.
