Remarks to the learned profes sor Viviani; to whom I knew they would be acceptable, and who had earnestly in vited me to do so. To his counsels I have deemed it right to sacrifice ampersonal ad. Ventures; as incompatible with an instruc tive journey unlesswhere they tend to ex plain the character and customs of a nation. As far as circumstances permitted, 'i' have endeavoured to place before the' reader the nature, aspect, andqnoductions of the coun tries I visited; and I have deposited in the museum of the university of Genoa, specimenswf the various soils, trith a view of augmenting the geological knowledge of that part of Africa.
