Synopsis

Excerpt from Complex System: Using Complex Objects for Controlling the Future

Traditionally, databases store, manipulate and retrieve information about the present and the past. We are interested in the future in this paper. Specifically, we want to control the future (make judicious decisions to reach certain objectives) and infer certain facts about it, i.e. Ask futuristic queries. Both of these questions are of importance; however, because of the space limitation, we will concentrate on control in this paper. Inference issues will be addressed elsewhere.

The future of a system can be understood only if one knows the current state of the system and the laws, governing the changes of the system, known as causality laws In other words, it is necessary to represent the state of the system and describe dynamic laws, controlling its change. We define a complex system as a pair, the first component describing the state of the system and the second the laws determining its futuristic behavior.
