Synopsis
This book comprises two historical memoirs written by a Spanish military officer and naturalist named Félix de Azara. The bulk of the work is a detailed account of Azara's journey to the Río de la Plata in South America. Azara's expedition coincided with a period of conflict between Spain and Portugal over their respective colonial boundaries. Azara, in addition to his scientific pursuits, was tasked by the Spanish Crown with determining the most advantageous frontier between the two nations. His observations regarding the natural history of South America are scientifically valuable. However, it is his conclusions about how the colonial borders should be established that make this book of enduring interest to historians. His proposed demarcation of the frontier was prescient; had his advice been heeded by Spain, it is likely that future conflict with Portugal could have been avoided.

About the Author
F lix de Azara, 18 de mayo de 1742 (Barbu ales, Huesca)-1821. (Espa a.) Fue militar, ingeniero, explorador, cart grafo, antrop logo y naturalista. Estudi en la Universidad de Huesca y en la Academia militar de Barcelona d nde se gradu en 1764. Sirvi en el regimiento de infanter a de Galicia y obtuvo el grado de lugarteniente en 1775. Siendo herido en la guerra de Argel, sobrevivi de milagro. Asimismo rechaz en 1815 la Orden de Isabel la Cat lica en protesta por los ideales absolutistas imperantes en Espa a. Mediante el tratado de San Ildefonso (1777), Espa a y Portugal fijaron los l mites de sus dominios en Am rica del Sur y Azara fue elegido como uno de los cart grafos encargados de delimitar con precisi n las fronteras. Al principio se estableci en Asunci n, Paraguay, para realizar los preparativos necesarios y esperar al comisario portugu s. Sin embargo, pronto se interes por la fauna local y comenz a estudiarla acumulando el extenso archivo que m s tarde conform los cimientos de su obra cient fica. Cabe a adir, adem s, que colabor con Jos Artigas en el establecimiento de pueblos en las fronteras entre la Banda Oriental (actual Uruguay) y el Imperio del Brasil. Azara muri en Espa a en octubre de 1821, v ctima de una pulmon a;fue tambi n conocida su amistad con Goya, quien pint un retrato suyo.
