L'accceil favorable que les douze livraisons des Exercices, publiées en 1826, ont reçu des Géomètres, détermine l'auteur à en faire paraître de nouvelles. Il y développera les diverses théories dont il a posé les bases dans les pre mières livraisons et traitera plusieurs objets que le défimt d'espace l'avait obligé de passer sous silence. Il s'occupera particulièrement des applications de l'analyse à la physique et montrera les facilités que présente à cet égard le calcul des résidus. Le premier volume des Exercices faisait déjà connaître une partie des avantages que l'on peut retirer de ce calcul pour la détermination des intégrales définies, pour la sommation des suites et pour l'intégration des équations différentielles linéaires. On verra maintenant le même calcul fournir des méthodes générales pour la solution des problèmes de physique mathéma tique, et acquérir ainsi une importance qu'on aurait pu ne pas soupçonner au premier abord. Ces méthodes contribueront d'ailleurs aux progrès de l'analyse infinitésimale et serviront non - seulement à intégrer des équations linéaires aux difi'érences partielles, mais encore à déterminer les fonctions arbitraires introduites par lmtégrati0n, d'après des conditions données, à développer des fonctions quelconques en séries d'expouoetiella dont les exposants soient respectivement proportionnel: aux diverses racines d'une équation transcen dante et à fixer des limites entre lesquelles se trouvent renfermés les restes prepm à compléter ces mêmes séries.
