Excerpt from The American Church History Series, Vol. 2: Consisting of a Series of Denominational Histories Published Under the Auspices of the American Society of Church History

They have insisted on applying the Scripture test positively and negatively to every detail of doctrine and practice. It has never seemed to them sufficient to Show that a doctrine or practice, made a matter of faith, is not contradictory of Scripture; it must be distinctly a matter of Scripture precept or example to command their allegiance or secure from them a recognition of its right to exist.
