Synopsis

Tackling the shaping of modern Europe through the ideas and actions of its great historians.

This volume collects Andrew D. White’s distinctive lectures on history, tracing how leaders, scholars, and reformers shaped politics, education, and law from the Renaissance through the 19th century. Rich with turning points and personalities, it offers a readable survey of ideas that still influence study and policy today.

From the Thirty Years’ War to the rise of the German Empire, these lectures connect political events with the people who explained, debated, and fought them. You’ll see how thinkers like Grotius and Comenius argued for new forms of international law and education, and how statesmen like Stein, Metternich, and Bismarck reshaped nations. The book presents both the drama of history and its underlying questions about power, reform, and civilization.

  • Clear portraits of key figures and the historical context surrounding their actions.
  • How religious, political, and educational ideas intersected with real-world policy.
  • An accessible overview of long-term shifts in Europe’s political landscape.
  • Connections between past debates and ongoing questions in governance and education.

Ideal for readers of general history, students, and anyone curious about how historical reasoning informs today’s world.

About the Author

Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) did more than any other American to impress upon late nineteenth- and twentieth century thought the idea that science and religion are enemies locked in combat on an almost military scale. In 1849, he entered Geneva College and later enrolled in Yale. After graduating, White joined the University of Michigan as a lecturer in history. He returned to New York and won election to the state senate. Finally, White went on to become the first president and cofounder of Cornell University. He also is the author of books, including Seven Great Statesmen in the Warfare of Humanity with Unreason and a 1906 autobiography.
