Excerpt from Silent Reading: A Study of the Various Types
The methods of the present inquiry are the complicated methods of the laboratory. By means of apparatus which has been fully described in an earlier study,x the eye-movements of a large number of pupils were photographed, and their habits of looking at the contents of the printed page were studied through comparisons of the resulting photographs.
It will, perhaps, make the later discussions easier to follow if the general psychological principles which issue from this study are briefly illustrated. To this end we may describe some of the typical results from the studies to be reported in the later pages of this monograph.
