This book chronicles explorations led by James H. Simpson who ventured into the Great Basin of Utah in 1859. The Great Basin lacked prior exploration, and Simpson's work in the region opened up new routes across it, including a wagon route from Camp Floyd in present-day Utah to Carson City in present-day Nevada. These routes were critical for westward expansion, as the mail, the pony express, and the telegraph were quickly rerouted onto them, shortening the distance to San Francisco by 250 miles. The author's research is bolstered by extensive documentation from the expedition's participants, including Lieutenant J.L. Kirby Smith and geologist Henry Engelmann. The book's maps and scientific observations still inform our understanding of the Great Basin's geography and climate. Simpson's expedition was the first to explore a wagon route across the Uintah Mountains to the Green River, an achievement which laid the groundwork for the development of the American West.
