Synopsis

This book introduces the true method of Isaac Newton’s Differential Calculus, which was based on the “second lemma” from his Principia. Before Newton’s breakthrough, the study of mathematics was a static one, but his work opened the door to the study of dynamic quantities and rates of change. The author contrasts Newton’s method with more recent ones and ultimately determines that Newton’s is superior, as it derives a mathematical law not from any actual change, but from the conditions contained in the algebraic formula by which the variable function is expressed. Exploring the rate and direction of change, the author argues that this approach forms the groundwork of the entire transcendental analysis and thereby provides clarity to a subject that was, in the author’s opinion, unnecessarily shrouded in mystery.
