Excerpt from Health and Life
I undertook the task, intending to produce nothing more than a few chapters which would serve the immediate purpose for which they were intended, and would remain a part of periodical literature.
When, however, the pen is in the hand of the writer, he is apt, if the subject on which he writes be congenial to him, to be led beyond his original intention. It was so in this case. The chapters increased in number until they were sufficient to make a volume, while by the favour of the public they received a welcome which in the opinion of the publishers warrants their appearance as a separate work.
