Synopsis

Excerpt from Realignments in Greater Medicine: Their Effect Upon Surgery and the Influence of Surgery Upon Them; General, Address in Surgery Delivered to the Xviith International Congress of Medicine, at Its Meeting in London on August 7, 1913

IN the following essay, which formed the surgical address before the 17th International Congress of Medicine at its meeting in London in August of 1913, I have attempted to indicate some of the transformations which have taken place or appear to be taking place in the profession of medicine, and more particularly those which concern the province of the surgeon.

I may have said more than was necessary in regard to experimentation upon animals and the handicap which has been put upon British medicine by ill-advised legislation, but the subject is not one for silence if speech can in any measure lend encouragement and support to the' work of the Research Defence League, of which the son of the president of that notable International Congress of 1881 is the honorary secretary. Stephen Paget's two volumes, the more recent of which contains the essentials of the testimony before the last Commission, should be familiar to every physician and student of medicine. Rousseau's passage, The truth is in the facts and not in the mind that observes them, might well be the prefix of these publications.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This compelling book examines the ongoing transformations occurring in the medical profession, particularly within the field of surgery. Following the life-saving discoveries of the 19th century that led to the establishment of germ theory, antisepsis, and anesthesia, the author discusses how surgery has advanced into a more scientific and less invasive field. The author also explores the ways in which surgery has become more closely aligned with internal medicine, as physicians adopt increasingly surgical techniques and surgeons become more involved in preventative measures. The text further discusses the ethical implications of animal testing and the importance of experimentation in propelling medical progress. The author concludes by examining the trend towards specialization within surgery and its potential implications for the future of medical care. This book offers a comprehensive and insightful look at the evolution of surgery and its growing significance within the broader landscape of medicine.
