Excerpt from The Incidental Bishop: A Novel
Tom Pringle, however, knew nothing of all this; as indeed, how could he P A simple-natured, gently bred Canadian young man, who had run away to sea as a lad of sixteen from a home in the interior, and spent the last eight years before the mast, he took it for granted that all other sailors were as indifferent honest as himself; and he accepted a berth on a Labour Trafi'ic steamer as readily as he would have accepted it on a Canadian four-master in the grain trade on lake Ontario. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a riveting journey into the dark underbelly of the South Pacific's notorious labor trade of the 1880s. The author transports readers back in time to witness an era where the abduction and exploitation of indigenous populations by Western powers were rampant. Through the eyes of Tom Pringle, a young Canadian sailor who unwittingly finds himself caught in the web of deceit, the book unveils the brutal reality of island life under colonial rule. The narrative explores the complex dynamics between European "civilizers" and the indigenous communities they sought to conquer. The author delves into the moral dilemmas faced by individuals caught between their conscience and the allure of profit, highlighting the devastating impact of greed and power on both the oppressors and the oppressed. This book is not just a historical account but a powerful indictment of the horrors of colonialism.
