Excerpt from Scottish Philosophy: A Comparison of the Scottish and German Answers to Hume
These Lectures - forming the first course were delivered towards the close of last session, and are now published substantially as they were then spoken. Some explanation of the reasons which dictated the choice of subject will be found in the opening of the first Lec ture. The mode of treatment followed must be left to justify itself. It was the desire of the founder of the Lectureship, and it has been mine also, that the Lectures should be a con tribution to philosophy, and not merely to the history of systems.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores themes of philosophical inquiry by analyzing the foundational concepts developed in Scottish Philosophy. The author argues that the philosophical ideas and critical approaches we take for granted today, had their genesis in the work of philosophers such as Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. The unifying thread that runs through the book is the author's belief that Scottish Philosophy is an underappreciated intellectual lineage that deserves to be acknowledged more widely. Delving into the main tenets of Scottish Philosophy, the text shows how the Scottish thinkers of the 18th century not only grappled with questions about the nature of knowledge and reality, but also anticipated many of the arguments put forward by philosophers today.
