Excerpt from Water Works and Pipe Distribution
The force of gravity acting with an ample reservoir differs from pump pressure for forcing water through pipes, in the important respect that it is always ready for instant use without notification by means of electric wires, tele phones, etc., and is not liable to break down or get out of order like pumps or other direct pressure appliances. It, moreover, exerts, at all times, a steady pressure on the pipe system, reducing the liability of breakage to a mini mum. A gravity system has a decided advantage over a direct pressure pumping system in that (if pipes are of proper size) the full volume of flow is instantly available without waiting to fire up extra steam boilers.
