Excerpt from The Garden That I Love Second Series
The Longest day.-some too partial persons have been pleased to say that not only the writing of books concerning gardens, but the growing atfec tion for them, owes something to The Garden that I Love. I am so little of an author, though so much of a gardener in a small way, that I fear the expression of this belief gives one a certain amount of pleasure, since even the most unambitious persons have, in their hearts, the foible of self complacency as much as the most soaring. But this weakness receives its corrective from Lamia's irony and the Poet's chastening sense.
