The following pages were written for work ers vjho wish for words of encouragement and hope to strengthen them in their toil; I Wish to forestall the critics, therefore, by say ing to them, Gentlemen, these pages are not for you. In the midst of many pressing cares, I have endeavored to speak to an emer gency; and While I am sensible'of the great defects of my work, I permit my words to go forth, because I believe I have spoken truth Which may be of benefit to a larger number ofthe Workers than I can personally reach.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is the first in a series of four, in which the author sets out to explore the Church's role in improving the lives of the working class. He begins by positing that labor is not a punishment or curse, but a sacred task. It is ordained by God for our spiritual benefit, and as such, all labor is honorable. The dignity of labor must be recognized and affirmed, particularly in those professions that are not deemed high-minded. The author explores the ways in which labor and capital could and should work together for the benefit of society. He emphasizes that it is not the existence of capital which is the problem but the abuse of capital. The author concludes by talking about the importance of savings and thrift but places more importance on a social and individual plan of cooperation among workingmen for mutual aid in sickness and misfortune. The insights provided by the author in this book could be a catalyst for improving the lives of working-class people.
