Excerpt from The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy, Vol. 1: Printed in the Text of the Revised Version 1885; The Reigns of David and Solomon, 1 Samuel 31 to 1 Kings 11, 1 Chronicles 10 to 2 Chronicles 9
The history of the Jewish Monarchy, as given in the Old Testament, is embodied in two narratives, compiled at different times and from different points of view. In the following pages they are combined. When two accounts of the same event are given, they are printed in parallel columns, so as to admit of comparison. When only one account is given, it is printed across the page in the usual way.
I trust the book may be serviceable even to advanced Students, who wish to collate for themselves the two authorities; but it is intended primarily for use in Schools. The difficulty of following the history in two sometimes concurrent and sometimes divergent authorities, both bound up in the same Bible - and often in very small type - is apt to drive boys to 'Compendiums' and 'Manuals,' in which a clear narrative is given, but the dignity and beauty of the original are entirely lost. By re-arranging the text I hope to have made the study of this part of the Bible easier and more attractive.
I wish to express my gratitude to the Joint Committee of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge for leave to print the text of the Revised Version. To Professor Driver, for most readily and kindly allowing me to reprint, as an Introduction, a passage from his 'Literature of the Old Testament,' my warmest thanks are due.

This book sets the story of David's reign as King of Israel alongside an alternative account from the Chronicles of David, allowing readers unparalleled insight into the life and times of one of the Old Testament's most pivotal figures. David's tumultuous journey from shepherd to King is retold with extraordinary detail, encompassing famous episodes from his battles with the Philistines to his seizure of Jerusalem. The Chronicles of David offer a unique perspective on these events, recounting them within the context of a broader and more overtly theological narrative. The book delves into the development of Jerusalem as a centre of worship, exploring the key role played by David in the Ark of the Covenant's transfer to the city. The author demonstrates expert knowledge of the historical context, illuminating both the strategies of ancient warfare and the richness of religious practice in the time of David. This captivating exploration of David's era is an invaluable resource for scholars and general readers alike, shedding new light on the formation of the Israelite monarchy and the development of religious ritual in the ancient world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
