N the spring of 1876, I prepared an article on Country-houses for Harper's Magazine, which was followed by a series of papers on inte riors, containing a few suggestions on household art in general. It then occurred to me that the importance of the subject would justify its treat ment in a more extended form. With this view, I began the prepara tion of the present work, which, although it might have been extended to several volumes without exhausting the subject, will, I trust, prove a practical and reliable guide for those persons who wish to build, furnish, and beautify their houses without an extravagant outlay of money.
In the following pages I have profited considerably by the writings of Eastlake and others. In some instances, I have quoted from T/ze American Architect and London Building News, and also from a work of my own published in 1863, which has been for some years out Of print.
