Excerpt from Church Needlework: With Practical Remarks on Its Arrangement and Preparation
The interest lately evinced on all subjects connected with the Internal Decoration of Churches, has led me to suppose, that the present volume might not prove unacceptable: the more so, as authors of works on Church Architecture, and Ecclesiastical Furniture, although they have pointed out where the decorations of the needle were required, are but little conversant with the practice of this branch of art.
I was hardly aware, however, at the commencement of my task, of the difficulties I had to encounter, or, of the contested ground upon which I was treading; - but I trust that, not having advocated the opinions of any, to none have I given offence. My aim has been to view the subject, both in its historical and practical bearings, in one light only - that of art.

This book examines the art of ecclesiastical needlework, a craft related to the internal decoration of churches that was particularly popular in medieval England. This art form was deeply connected with the Gothic architectural style of the time. The author traces this artistic practice from its origins to its resurgence in the present day. The book highlights how Gothic decorative art appreciates ecclesiastical needlework, and delves into the history of its use in vestments and altar cloths. While ecclesiastical needlework fell out of favor during the Reformation, it has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent times. The author argues that embroidery and needlework for sacred spaces are not merely ornaments, but objects that serve a meaningful purpose in enhancing the beauty of sacred spaces and contributing to the overall experience of worship. They can be used to create a sense of awe and reverence, and to help people to connect with the divine.
