Synopsis

Excerpt from Julius Caesar and the Foundation of the Roman Imperial System

In this volume I have tried to meet the wishes of the publishers, by explaining to those who are comparatively unfamiliar with classical antiquity the place which Cæsar occupies in the history of the world. He was not the founder, much less was he the organiser of the Roman Empire ; yet his life marks a great change in European history. I have tried to show (and have done my best to express on the title-page) what this change means, how it was in part the result of pre-existing tendencies, and was due in part to Cæsar's extraordinary force of will and intellect. In a volume of this size, it has been impossible to keep this main object in view without sacrificing many details and avoiding criticism and controversy on innumerable disputed points, whether of Roman constitutional law, or of the geography of the Gallic and Civil wars.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and impact of a pivotal figure in European history, a man who, while not the founder of the Roman Empire, played a crucial role in its transformation. Born into a Rome teetering on the brink of chaos, the author explores how this individual's extraordinary force of will and intellect shaped the course of events. Set against the backdrop of a crumbling republic, the narrative traces the subject's journey from his privileged yet turbulent upbringing to his rise as a statesman and military leader. It examines the complex political landscape of the late Roman Republic, marked by corruption, social unrest, and the decay of traditional values. The author skillfully analyzes the subject's navigation of these challenges, highlighting his strategic alliances, his understanding of the changing needs of the Roman state, and his vision for a more unified and stable empire. Through a meticulous examination of contemporary evidence, including the subject's own writings and those of his contemporaries, the book offers profound insights into the man behind the legend. It explores his motivations, his methods, and the far-reaching consequences of his actions, leaving readers with a deeper understanding of his enduring legacy and the indelible mark he left on the course of Western civilization.
