Synopsis

Excerpt from The Epicurean: A Tale

The Story which occupies this volume was intended originally to be told in verse; and a great portion of it was at first written in that form. This fact, as well as the character, perhaps, of the whole work, which a good deal partakes of the cast and colouring of poetry, have been thought sufficient to entitle it to a place in this general collection of my poetical writings.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book by the author Thomas Moore tells the tale of a young man named Alciphron who is elected as the chief of a school of philosophers known as Epicureans in Athens during the reign of Valerian. Epicureans, once focused on ethical conduct, have now become known for their lavish and self-indulgent lifestyles, which are examined in-depth by the author. The story follows Alciphron through his belief that pleasure is the highest good and that virtue is only sought to obtain pleasure. It is set during a time of great transition from traditional religious beliefs to a more secular and materialistic worldview. As Alciphron leads the school in an era of peace and prosperity, he becomes obsessed with the idea of overcoming the one thing no pleasure or earthly possession can overcome: the fear of death. He travels to Egypt, the land of mystery, in search of a key to immortality and discovers the reality of death and the afterlife. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781330271148_0
