Excerpt from The Great Boer War: A Two Years Record 1899-1901
The book was begun in England and continued on board a steamer, but the greater part was written in a hospital tent in the intervals of duty during the epidemic at Bloemfontein. Often the only documents which I had to consult were the convalescent officers and men who were under our care. Under these circum stances some errors may have crept in, but on the other hand I have had the inestimable advantage of visiting the scene of this great drama, of meeting many of the chief actors in it, and of seeing with my own eyes some thing of the actual operations.

This book delves into the historical roots and escalating tensions that culminated in the Boer War, a conflict that pitted the British Empire against the Dutch-speaking settlers of southern Africa. The author traces the origins of the Boer people, their Great Trek into the interior, and the establishment of the Transvaal and Orange Free State republics. The discovery of gold in the Transvaal attracted a large influx of foreigners, known as Uitlanders, who came to outnumber the Boers but were denied political rights and faced discriminatory treatment. The book examines the complex web of political, economic, and social grievances that fueled the Uitlanders' discontent and ultimately led to their calls for reform and representation. This historical account provides a comprehensive analysis of the events and factors that shaped the Boer War, shedding light on the clash between British imperial ambitions and Boer aspirations for self-determination. By exploring the perspectives of both sides, the author offers a nuanced understanding of the conflict's causes and consequences, leaving readers to contemplate the enduring legacy of colonialism and the struggle for equality in South Africa.
