To him is due the sug ostion that I should examine the work of this grou o systema tic colonizers. I have to thank him or his constant encouragement, and for his unsparing criticism and advice, without which this book would not have been written.
I have also to thank my friend, Mr. J. Drummond Smith, m.a. (aberdeen), of the London School of found time to read my book in manu script, and to assist me in reading the proofs.
