Synopsis

Excerpt from The Metaphysics of Sir William Hamilton, Collected, Arranged, and Abridged, for the Use of Colleges and Private Students

IT is unfortunate that Sir William Hamilton did not undertake fully to digest his metaphysical opinions into system,a and to publislfd them as one 01derly and connected whole. He had a system, fo1 he was eminently a method ical and self consistent thinker but it was built up piece meal, and so given to the world, at various times, in succes sive articles in the Edinburgh Review; in copious notes, appendices, and other additions to these articles when they were republished as a volume of Discussions, and again, when these Discussions passed to a second edition in the Notes, and, still more at length, in the Supplementai y Disse1tations, to his ponderous edition of Reid; and finally, in the memoranda p1epa1 ed at different times and for va1i ous purposes, which his English editors gathered up and annexed to the posthumous publication of his Lectu1es on Metaphysics. While neither of these works furnishes an outline of his system as a whole, each one of them con tains a statement, more or less complete, of his principal doctrines and arguments, so that, taken together, they abound in repetitions. Even the Lectures, which afford the nearest approach to a full and systematic exposition of his opinions, besides laboring under the necessary disad vantage of a posthumous publication, never finally revised by the author for the press, and probably not even intended by him to be printed, were first written by him 1n g1eat haste at the time (1836) of his o1iginal appointment to a Professorship ln the Univeisity of Edinburgh, and seem to have received but few subsequent alte1ations or additions, though his opinions certainly underwent afterwards con siderable development and modification.

About the Author

Dr Hamilton comes from a background of clinical and academic general practice. His medical career began in hospital medicine, including 2 ? years as a physician in Malawi, followed by 11 years as a principal (and senior partner) in general practice. He is now a full-time primary care researcher, funded by the NHS. His main research interest is in diagnosis in primary care, particularly that of cancer, and he recently completed three diagnostic studies for the Department of Health on colorectal, prostate and lung cancers. The colorectal results in particular have borne fruit, in that further studies on a tool for earlier diagnosis of this cancer have been funded by the DoH.

Dr Hamilton is a founder member of the NRCI Primary Care Studies Development Group (the umbrella organisation for cancer studies in primary care) and the NICE Guideline Development Group for CFS/ME. He has written over 50 peer-reviewed publications, largely in the field of diagnosis, with cancer being the largest topic. Dr Hamilton also co-edited the 2nd edition of 'Orthopaedics in Primary Care', which involved the key skill of translating orthopaedic surgeons language into English! His writing is not just the dry format of research papers: he has written editorials for the BMJ and BJGP, lighter pieces for the back pages of the BJGP and a lengthy piece on constipation for BMJ learning!

As well as his medical qualifications he has a certificate in literature (with merit!) from the University of Exeter.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the utility of studying philosophy, beginning with an examination of the practical and theoretical value it holds. The author argues that studying the mind in particular is the most efficient way to develop a strong, educated mind. The author then discusses the two Errors in popular estimates of comparative utility of human sciences and studies, which are the undervaluing of the study of man as an end in himself and regarding the cultivation of our faculties as subordinate to the acquisition of knowledge. The author concludes by discussing the importance of psychology in relation to theology, stating that religious belief is founded upon psychology and that liberty is a necessary condition of morality. The book provides a detailed examination of the utility of philosophy, using historical and literary references to support the arguments presented.
