Excerpt from Studies About the Sanskrit Buddhist Literature
The present article forms a sequel to what I published on the same subject in the first volume of the Polish Archives of Oriental Research, three years ago. The notes I venture to pre sent to the readeriwere mostly taken in the year 1915 when I was busy in bringing about the MS (long since ready for print) for a; revised edition of the Buddhacarita. Whoever thinks we had better refrain from such conjectural emendation and critical examination of ancient texts, may condemn my work as super fluous. For my part I subscribe to Bohtlingk's opinion that it is 7,fiir die Wissenschaft erspriesslicher, schon gedruckte Werke, die dem Inhalt oder der Sprache nach Beachtung verdienen, zu sich ten und zu verbessern, als neuere Erzeugnisse von fraglichem Werte zu veroffentlichen. Now the Buddhacarita certainly deser ves consideration in the utmost degree.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the Sanskrit Buddhist literature of the classical period through the prism of two major works: the Buddhacarita and the Saundarananda. The author, an accomplished scholar of Sanskrit, critically examines these texts, shedding light on textual problems, variant readings, and nuanced interpretations. Through this analysis, the book offers fresh perspectives on the development and reception of Mahayana Buddhist thought in ancient India. By re-examining primary sources, the book contributes new insights into the transmission and reception of these foundational texts. It delves into the rich literary and philosophical traditions of Buddhism, shedding light on the evolution of Buddhist thought and its impact on Indian civilization. The book not only serves as a valuable resource for scholars of Sanskrit and Buddhist studies but also appeals to a broader audience interested in the history of religions, literature, and philology.
