Excerpt from Advanced Physiography
The table of Emission and Absorption Spectra is inserted by the kind permission of Mr. Norman Lockyer.
I am indebted to my brother, Mr. A. Thornton, M.A., for valuable hints and suggestions in most of the chapters. To the friends who have assisted in the labour of revising proofs I also wish to express my obligations.
In conclusion, the reader is advised to obtain a copy of the excellent pamphlet entitled, 'Demonstrations and Practical Work in Astronomical Physics.' It is issued by the Science and Art Department, and, besides giving an idea of the valuable course of instruction carried on under the direction of Professor Lockyer, will serve as a useful supplement to what is said on this subject in the course of this work.
In this edition I have made a number of small alterations and corrections, besides adding twenty-three new paragraphs on the new matter included in the latest syllabus. Suitable questions on these paragraphs have also been added in the Appendix. I am greatly indebted to Dr. Roberts for his courteous permission to copy two of his splendid photographs of the nebulæ.
