By 1840 there were hundreds Of small and growing centers stretching from New England through the South and from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. The United States was figuratively crying for humanity to man its towns. Furthermore, the traditional methods Of wholesale and retail distribution were being strained to the limit and were in need of supplement.
