Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Studies
The contents of the present volume consist chiefly of writings which have not hitherto been collected. The only articles included here which have previously appeared in book-form are the essays on The Poetry of William Blake and on Shelley. I have included these, not only because I think they show Thomson at his best as a critic, but also because I was anxious to bracket them and the article on Garth Wilkinson A Strange Book together. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the intellectual and literary insights embedded in the prolific writings of François Rabelais. An influential 16th-century French writer, Rabelais was a master satirist whose subversive writings laid bare the hypocrisy and inequalities of his time, and had a significant impact on the development of Western literature. His most remarkable work, a series of five books published between 1532 and 1564 and known collectively as Gargantua and Pantagruel, chronicles the adventures of two giants and their companions. Considered among the greatest works of French Renaissance literature, they mix fantasy with philosophical insights and social commentary to explore themes of religion, education, politics, and morality. This volume collects Rabelais' prose writings outside of his renowned series and includes essays on such varied subjects as the works of William Blake, religious thought, and Renaissance literature, providing a well-rounded perspective of the author's multifaceted intellect.
