Excerpt from Notes on the Principles of Pure and Applied Calculation: And Applications of Mathematical Principles to Theories of the Physical Forces
I am glad to be permitted to dedicate this Volume to you, because an opportunity is thus given me of publicly expressing the high opinion I entertain of the value of your scientific labours, especially those relating to Terrestrial and Cosmical Magnetism, which I have had peculiar means of appreciating from the use I have made of them in my Theory of Magnetic Force.
I feel also much gratified by the circumstance that in availing myself of your permission I dedicate the work to the President of the Royal Society. The special object of my theoretical researches has been to arrive at a general physical theory by means of mathematical reasoning employed in accordance with principles and rules laid down in the philosophical works of Newton.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive and detailed exposition of the author's Physical Theory, which treats the sciences of Pure and Applied Calculation, the Principles of Geometry, Spherical Astronomy, Statics, Hydrostatics, Dynamics, and Physical Astronomy, culminating in a detailed mathematical treatment of the forces of Light, Heat, Electricity, Galvanism, Magnetism, and Gravity. The author sought to deduce correlations between the physical forces and explain them through a unifying mathematical theory. The book emerged from dissatisfaction with the state of physical science and attempted to revolutionize the field by providing rigorous mathematical foundations for physical phenomena. It remains significant as a historical exploration of the intersection of mathematics and physics.
