Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science
Johnston (4) erroneously regarded the brain as a double heart, the longitudinal nerve-stems as vessels. Several later authors have fallen into the same error.
Rathke (5) carefully avoided it and describes the median and the two lateral longitudinal vessels of Linens.
Quatrefages (7) in his Splendid treatise on this group of worms has given an accurate description of the circulatory system of certain Hoplonemertea. He, however, too peremptorily looked upon this description as applying to all Nemertea, whereas most considerable differences Obtain in the other groups. However, his figures have found their way into most Of the text-books of zoology as correctly illustrating the vascular system of the Nemertea indiscriminately.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the evolution of the circulatory and nephridial apparatus of nemerteans, a fascinating group of marine worms with remarkable adaptations. The author, a zoologist, synthesizes historical research with his own detailed observations and anatomical studies of nemertean species. He meticulously describes various vascular and excretory systems, comparing those of different nemerteans to uncover their evolutionary relationships. This comparative approach enriches our understanding of the diversity and complexity of circulatory and excretory mechanisms within the nemertean family tree. The author's insights shed light on the intricate physiological adaptations that allow these organisms to thrive in diverse marine environments, making this book an essential resource for zoologists and marine biologists studying the evolution and biology of nemerteans.
