It is a remarkable fact that an institution which has been in exis tence in this country for over a century, has enlisted the support and ia terest of some of the ablest men of that time, and become so important, if not necessary, a part in the lives of the millions of individuals who have acquired the thrift habit through it, and accumulated money and property by reason of it, should have produced so little literature. The works that have heretofore appeared have, in the main, been historical and statistical rather than technical. It was the aim of the author in preparing the work for the first edition to supply this lack and to fur nish a practical treatise on savings banking, with enough of the his torical and legal to make it a well rounded work.
