Excerpt from Sudan Notes and Records: January 1918
It was with the liveliest satisfaction and pleasure that I learned that the proposal to establish a scientific journal for the Sudan had matured. The need of such a publication is a very real one and the field of its study will be wide and, in a great measure, virgin soil. I say this without any disparagement of the really admirable work already performed by individuals (the names of several of whom I am glad to see on the Editorial staff of the new journal): but, having regard to the extent of the Sudan and to the obstacles to systematic research, it will be admitted that our knowledge of the country and its people requires to he extended in many directions.
Knowledge is power, in Africa and elsewhere, and if, as I confidently hope, this journal will be the means of recording and disseminating information that will conduce to a clearer outlook on the country and a better understanding of its natives, their past history, social conditions and future development, it will confer a lasting benefit not solely on those responsible for Government but also on the community at large.
There is one corner in particular of the wide field of research to which I suggest early and careful attention should be paid if valuable material is to be rescued from oblivion.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating ancient history of the region south of Egypt, known as the Southern Lands, with a particular focus on the area that now encompasses the Sudan. The author meticulously examines the intricate relationship between Egypt and the Southern Lands, spanning millennia, from the Early Dynastic Period (circa 3300 to 2900 BC) to the Old Empire (circa 2900 to 2500 BC). Through a wealth of archaeological evidence, including inscriptions and excavations, the author reconstructs the vibrant trade routes that connected Egypt with Central Africa. These routes facilitated the exchange of goods such as ivory, ebony, resins, and precious metals, shaping the economic and political landscapes of both regions. The narrative vividly portrays the lives of Egyptian officials, caravan leaders, and military expeditions as they navigated the challenges and opportunities presented by the Southern Lands. Central to the book's exploration is the concept of Ethiopia as a 'land of roads', a crucial link between Egypt and the riches of Central Africa. The author delves into the complex dynamics of trade, diplomacy, and occasional conflict that characterized this relationship, offering profound insights into the historical significance of the Sudan and its enduring connection to Egypt. As we journey through the pages of this book, we gain a deeper appreciation for the pivotal role that the Sudan played in the ancient world, shaping the course of history for both Egypt and the African continent.
