Synopsis

Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics, Comprehending Statics and Dynamics: With a Copious Collection of Mechanical Problems; Intended for the Use of Mathematical Students in Schools and Universities; With Numerous Plates

A body subjected to the action of a force or moving influ ence, ought, necessarily, to move in the direction of that force; towards it, if the force draw or attract it, and from it, if the force push or repel it. Hence, it is the tendency of a body influenced by a single force applied to it at rest to move in a straight direction. But if to the same point two equal and directly opposite forces are applied, the tendency\ to motion in one direction being equal to the tendency in the opposite direction, the point will necessarily remain at rest, and will be as much prepared to obey the influence of any third force as it was before the two counterbalancing forces, of which we have just spoken, were applied.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth study of mechanics, the branch of science concerned with the equilibrium and motion of bodies, with a particular focus on statics, the study of forces in equilibrium. The author begins by defining force and equilibrium before investigating the composition and resolution of concurrent forces, that is, forces that act on a single point and lie within the same plane. The book explains how to determine the resultant of two or more concurrent forces, a fundamental concept for understanding the behavior of mechanical systems. It covers the parallelogram of forces and the concept of the resultant as the diagonal of a parallelogram constructed on the lines representing the forces, extending this concept to three or more forces using graphical and analytical methods. The author then examines the equilibrium of a rigid body, detailing the conditions for equilibrium and applying them to a variety of examples. The book concludes with a discussion of the strength and stress of beams, a topic critical to engineering applications. This book provides a comprehensive and accessible guide to the fundamentals of statics, making it a valuable resource for students, engineers, and anyone interested in mechanics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781330427200_0
