This book delves into the history of the generic name Sarracenia, named after a Canadian physician and scientist, and the many botanists and naturalists associated with this genus of carnivorous plants. The author traces the discovery and description of the first Sarracenia species in the 16th century to its placement in the modern genus Sarracenia in the 18th century and beyond. The author highlights the confusion and debate surrounding the identity of two botanists of similar names, one from Quebec and one from Lyons, France, and how this confusion led to incorrect naming of the genus. The book also examines the subsequent nomenclatural and taxonomic history of the genus, including the description of new species and varieties. Through detailed descriptions and analysis of historical documents, this book provides a comprehensive and engaging account of the botanical exploration and classification of Sarracenia.
