My Dear Bishop: You asked me more than a year ago to get out a book of short Private Prayers; but many things prevented. Not long since you renewed the request, saying you felt the need of a short manual of Private Prayers; that you would like to give a copy to each one of those you confirmed; that the other volume I had edited, "Aid to Those who Pray in Private," you liked very much, but thought it might be shortened to advantage; that the ages gone by were times of meditation and introspection, but this was an age of activity which we could not ignore, but must meet wisely and do for it the best we could. I feel the justice of what you say, and so present you with this volume, which, though not a shortened edition of the other book, but a new one, may be what you desire. Should it meet with your approval, I shall feel confident it will be of some help to those who draw nigh to God.
