Excerpt from The Art Theatre: A Discussion of Its Ideals, Its Organization, and Its Promise as a Corrective for Present Evils in the Commercial Theatre
My point of view differs from that of some other writers about little theatres, in that I con sider them important only as steps toward some thing better. In all the excitement about little theatres we are in danger of losing sight of the higher ideal - the art theatre. I have tried to keep that ultimate ideal constantly in mind.

At the time of its writing, a nascent little theater movement in the United States was struggling to mimic the successes of European art theater but had not yet solidified into a distinct American genre. The author argues for the unique characteristics of the American art theater, and the necessity of professionalizing the existing little theater landscape while preserving the spirit of artistic inquiry. The book discusses the failures and halting successes of the little theater movement and contrasts their development with the theatrical cultures of Europe. Concurrently the text delves into the contributions of major European theater artists and institutions, particularly those of the Moscow Art Theater and Gordon Craig. The author concludes with a thoughtful prospectus for the future of art theater in America, arguing for its necessity in the development of a robust American dramatic art.
