Excerpt from Report of the Exploring Expedition: From Santa Fé, New Mexico, to the Junction of the Grand and Green Rivers of the Great Colorado of the West, in 1859; With Geological Report
Sir: -when Major Macomb, of the Topographical Engineers (now colonel of engineers), made his report of an important exploration in New Mexico, in 1859, he was unable to furnish the report on the geology of that region, owing to the fact that Dr. J. S. Newberry, the geologist who accompanied him, was then actively employed in his duties on the Sanitary Commission in the West.
