Let us review briefly the modern aspect of the physical sciences, with especial reference to this new doctrine of force. We shall endeavor to show, or at least to make it probable, that this force can not, in any instance, originate in matter itself, but must have a spiritual origin. With this end in view, it will be necessary to examine somewhat in detail the brilliant and plausible theories now held and propagated by some of the most eminent scientists of the day, to show, if possible, wherein they are fallacious. And, first, what is the present aspect of the physical sciences?
